IN MEMORIAM

Sergey Artem'evich Aivazian – a respected editor of our magazine, a head of Department of Econometrics and Applied Statistics, Central Economics and Mathematics Institute (CEMI) Russian Academy of Sciences, a meritorious Russian scientist, a member of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, and university professor, passed away on March 12, 2019.

In the late 1960s, S.A. Aivazian established a laboratory of applied probability theory and mathematical statistics methods in CEMI RAS, and in 1969 he established a permanent seminar "Multivariate Statistical Analysis and Probability Modeling of Real Processes", which had a significant impact on the formation and development of applied statistics and econometrics.

He is the author of more than 350 scientific papers, including monographs and textbooks, many of which have been published overseas. He has achieved great scientific results in researching mechanisms of distribution relations in society and assessment of the quality of life of the population. For these papers, S.A. Aivazian received the highest Soviet, Russian and international scientific awards by: Council of Ministers of the USSR (1986), National Statistical Congress of France (1986), European Economic Association (1988); International Scientific Foundations for "Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Economic Sciences" (2007), a medal for "Contribution to Education" (2009), the order of "Merit for Fatherland", 2nd class (2014), and the Laureate of the premium "L.V. Kantorovich" (2017).

As a head of the Department of Econometrics and Mathematical Methods of Economics at the Moscow Economic School at Moscow State University "M.V. Lomonosov", S.А. Aivazian devoted much attention to the training of scientific staff. He was a Professor at the Moscow Financial and Industrial Academy, Professor of the State University - Higher School of Economics, visiting professor at the Institute of Economics and Mathematics, University of Dijon (France, 1980), Royal Holloway University in London (1996-1998), University of Geneva (2007-2012), President of the Dissertation Council for defending doctoral and master thesis of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at CEMI RAS.

S.A. Aivazian was editor-in-chief of the "Applied Econometrics" journal, a member of editorial board of the following magazines: "Economics and Mathematical Methods", "Theory of Probability and its Applications", "Concepts" and "Montenegrin Journal of Economics"; he organized nine international school seminars "Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Econometrics" and nine international conferences "Application of Multidimensional Statistical Analysis in Economics and Quality Assessment".

This distinguished scientist, exceptional man, and our great friend will always live in our memories.
